Trusting Your Intuition

Many of us have trouble connecting with our intuition. I hear it from others all the time, either they think they don't have "the gift" or they lack the confidence to trust what their intuition tells them. Some seem to be under the impression that there are "special" souls that are blessed with intuitive minds, and that "normal" people don't have the same abilities.
Then, there are others who don't believe in intuition at all! Maybe they've never heard of it, or they've been led to believe that intuition is some kind of impossible mythical psychic ability, like something you might see in a fictional movie.
In reality, intuition is something we all have. It's not a fictional super power, and it's not just reserved for a few elite members of humanity. It is a natural occurring sense that every single one of us are born with. It's just like your sense of touch, or smell, or sight. The only difference is that your other senses help you interact with the tangible things in the world, and your intuition helps you interact with the things that aren't quite so tangible.
Have you ever had a bad feeling about someone you just met? Have you ever had your heart skip a beat a few seconds before you had a close-encounter on the road? How about that nagging feeling that something's going on, even though there's no real evidence to support it?
Those "feelings" we get are a result of our intuition communicating with us. You see, our subconscious mind has a lot of information that our conscious mind doesn't. It picks up on those things we're "not supposed to know," and it gives us cues that come through as "gut feelings." Since our conscious minds can't find any logical explanation for how we got this information, we tend to push that knowledge aside and write it off.
To our own defense, we do live in a world where anything that can't be explained is quickly shoved under the rug and ignored. After all, how credible does it sound if your only evidence is "I just know?" Because society tends to frown on things like that, most of us are conditioned from a very young age to believe that things like intuition are silly, childish, and make you look like you're crazy. To avoid the trouble of being outcasted or made fun of, we learn to suppress the "weird" and conform with "normal."
Even if this is your situation, and you've spent your life suppressing your intuitive senses, it's not too late to reconnect with that part of yourself again! Trust me, it never really goes away! Whether you need to reconnect with your intuitive senses or you just need help trusting what they tell you, here is what you can do to make that happen.
Do some digging. The first thing you need to do is recognize the reason behind your lack of trust in your intuition. Is it because you were taught that it didn't exist? Do you have trouble trusting that the messages it gives you are correct? Do you fear what others will say if you talk about it? It's important to consider this before you do anything else. If you aren't sure what's holding you back, you won't be able to move past it. Once you recognize what it is, keep it in mind! You'll want to remember what's getting in your way, so you can learn to recognize it if it happens in the future.
Pay attention. Now you'll want to start paying close attention to those "feelings" you get. It's easy to disregard them so quickly, sometimes we don't even realize they were there in the first place. Refrain from letting it go when it happens. If you suddenly get a bad feeling, stop and pay attention to it. Ask yourself exactly what it tells you. Do this anytime you get that "I just know" feeling. Even if you are tempted to tell yourself it's nothing, pretend it's something. Try giving yourself the benefit of the doubt. Offer yourself a little trust. Make note of it for later.
Keep a journal. I believe this is extremely important! If you get one of those feelings, write it down! Record the date, exactly what happened, and why you feel the way you do. Go back and revisit old entries after a few days. Eventually, you will be able to look back and see how right you were! It might seem silly, but this is a great way to work on building your own trust in yourself.
Keep at it. Believe it or not, you can develop your intuition further over time. Start small, and take steps toward trusting yourself. You will get better at it, and it will get much easier to connect with your intuitive abilities. You really don't need any fancy tools, hypnosis programs, or anything else. You simply need to be willing to offer yourself some trust.
And don't forget, everyone can do this! Those of us who are better in tune with our intuitive side are not special. You have access to these same abilities, too! All you really need is a willingness to believe it!
